Reindeer House
Established as Reindeer House in Glenmore, as a meeting place for interested parties waiting to join guided tours onto the hill, the Reindeer Centre has since evolved into an information point and Reindeer Shop as well. Wall displays tell visitors more about the reindeer, their natural history, world distribution and, of course, their association with the famous Father Christmas.
Reindeer House
There are small paddocks at the Reindeer Centre where visitors who do not have time to go on the hill trip can see a small group of reindeer that we bring down off the hills from day to day. Any reindeer which need particular attention, such as extra feeding after an illness, are also likely to be staying at the centre.
To visit the Paddocks there is a small charge of £2.50 Adults and £1.50 Children and concession; children under six are free; £6 for a family (2 adults and three children); Prices at 2008. Please note these prices increase during each December when we have "Christmas Fun".
For details about visiting the main herd on the hill please click on the "Visits to the Cairngorm Reindeer" link..
Meet the Owners

Alan J. Smith - Managing Director
Tilly Smith - Director/Secretary

Tilly and Alan with reindeer

Alan, born and bred in the Highlands, commenced working with the Cairngorm reindeer in 1978 at the tender age of 18 when he was appointed by the owner of the reindeer, Mikel Utsi, as the reindeer keeper. Following Mr. Utsi's death in 1979, Alan continued to look after the reindeer for Mr. Utsi's widow, Dr. Lindgren.

Tilly was born in rural Hertfordshire where her father was the local doctor with a keen interest in natural history. She studied zoology at Bristol University and, after getting her degree, wrote to Mr. Utsi's widow to ask if she might work as a summer volunteer with the Cairngorm reindeer. She set off for Scotland in the summer of 1981 and has not sought another way of life since.

Alan and Tilly married in 1983 and following Dr. Lindgren's death, they bought the Reindeer Company in August 1989. To complete the picture, there are two younger Smiths - Alex and Fiona who ably support the family business.Back to Top
